A publication from the Laboratory Medicine, Prof. Ido Kema, UMC Groningen, has been released.
Melatonin and cortisol are primarily analyzed separately, mainly using immunoassays. The group of Prof. Kema developed a reliable and reproducible analytical method based on a high precision LC-MS/MS assays which can measure melatonin and cortisol in plasma and saliva. Quantification of these markers is crucial to investigate over disturbance of the circadian rhythm, which is often associated with disease states, such as metabolic disorders, depression and cancer.
The assays, which are validated in a research setting, are available on the BiomarkerBay database.
The analytical method is described in: Relationship between plasma and salivary melatonin and cortisol investigated by LC-MS/MS (Faassen et al., Clin Chem Lab Med. 2016 Dec 20). Here is the full publication.
